The Best Radio I've Ever Reviewed Got Even Better. The Choyong LC90 Gets Better Every Day
The first video I put out on this radio a few months back got some backlash. Mostly centered around the radios lack of general 1-30mhz coverage and a lack of SSB mode.
While I felt that these are nice features, I was still please with my radio. Well, a few months have past and wow, the engineers over at Choyong stayed busy. First they added general coverage from .1 to 30mhz, then they added SSB modes to hear all the Ham coverstations. Then they updated the internet radio side of things, then they added voice search, now they have removed an issue with some of their radios that apparently caused harmonics on certain freqs. While I never had an issue with it, apparently they wanted it fixed...

NewAir 3.1cu.ft. Fridge/Freezer Combo. The Studio Get's an Upgrade!
Просмотров 52912 часов назад
I spend a lot of time up here in the studio answering comments, editing videos and of course filming them too! While on my trip to Dayton Ohio for Hamvention, I came across a small microwave for like $40 with tax and decided to get it. Result? I love it but wanted a fridge to go with it. New Air had this sweet combo unit that is small, but not so small that it's useless. So far, I love it! You ...

Maxon MCB 30 CB radio. Old school, but rock solid Radio from Maxton the company everyone forgets.

We all know the heavy hitters of the 80's and 90's/ Uniden, Cobra, Realistic, and Midland, but also running around in the mix was Maxon. They made a lot of decent radios back in the day and also made a lot of the radios for Radio Shack as well. My first 40 channel radio, a Realistic TRC-444 was a Maxon inside. Kaweets KIT W01 Thermal Imager. Perfect for Radio and Computer Repairs.
I LOVE the styling of this radio. I may have to add this to the wish list
How do I adjust the cable as I ran it a few times after putting the new one on and now it won’t engage. I think you said to slide the cable and set the screw, but want to make sure. Thank- you for the great video as changing the cable is not in my Sear’s Craftman’s manual.
the problem with this sort of alignment is that you are not aligning to the axis of rotation of the axles, but rather aligning to the wheel itself. No runout compensation, and even stock wheels will have some imperfections, not to even mention the condition of wheels that have been in use tens of thousands of miles. So there is no way that you will be as close. This is not to say that a person with DIY tools cannot do a DIY alignment. They can, but the tools to do it are far more than just a plate, and some tape measures.
Awesome review, 1st & 2nd!! I need this radio in my life now!! Thanks alot!! Lol 😂 Good thing my birthday is around the corner. LOL 👍💯💯
Seems like someone has a butt hurting because they got a bad example of a great car.. My XC70 (Which is little newer) is at 138,000 miles and no problems. (because I take care of it!) The main reason these cars cost people so much money is because they think "Volvo! its great I'll buy it and forget about maintenance" then they realize if you don't maintain properly, your repairs will be 3x the cost. Which is why the end up being $500 on resale. Take care of it, and you'll be good for 200,000 easy. (barring some odd variables that aren't typical) "Oh i had to replace the brakes!" Yea, welcome to car ownership.
Sounds like someone didn't watch the video. I was a Volvo master tech from 1993 to 2014. My words come from many years of the same repairs on these turds. Just trying to warn people about them.
Now, more than ever; knowledge is power.
No Air Band...
I don't have none of those things
Can I get my radio updated with the new software?
Yes! The update is available on their website. You download it and install it via the USB charging cable.
@@FarpointFarms Looks like you can also do it via WiFi. There is a video on the amazon link to the new radio.
How far does a bike travel on a single charge?
It can vary depending on the terrain, how much the rider weighs, etc...
had a pc78ltw. bought new in 2001, every day it got used up to 16hrs till 2023 when i discovered ssb. couldn't kill it
I hope that you still have it. It would be a shame to get rid if it just for not having SSB
@@FarpointFarms constantly learning. unlikely to operate AM only radios again. crt 6900v out of the box has been a real blessing due to being able to work around 555usb with <15w. thanks for all your valuable information
Nice video. Very helpful. Do you have one for replacing the seal on the hydraulic cylinder? Is it easy to do once I have that tie rod off?
I don't have one on that- Sorry
I just found one of these at Goodwill for $8.99.. can't find anything online for it, this is the only video. I can't seem to pick up anything, including the weather, and have tried several antennas. Am I doing something wrong?
Have you checked the SWR?
I recently got into SW listening, and I agree on the HAM band (~7100) it's mostly old guys I hear. I have a handheld CB transceiver that I take when I go driving and it sounds like the same idiots I used to hear as a kid back in the 70s-80s, only fewer of them. But, at least where I live, the MW AM band is still as busy as ever, despite the efforts of some people to kill it. I subscribe to Ringway Manchester's channel and is reporting on the rapid death of AM in the UK, showing video of abandoned AM transmitter sites, some repurposed as cell towers. Let's hope that never happens in the US.
You are correct- I am sure it is the same as back 40 years ago.
I had the first one and I liked it, but felt it was a little complicated and instructions were poor. Also their website needed a lot of work and it was a pain to request different podcasts to add. Sent it back. Dont know if the upgrade addressed these issues. Thanks.
The updates did address some of the complaints- They are still working on more updates as needed. The company is really listening to what people were asking about
@FarpointFarms But I agree with you that as a all in one radio, it's hard to beat.
Blame Biden’s ev mandate
This happened long before all the EV stuff.
In your opinion, what is a fair price for a 142gtl? Found a seller with multiple units but they claim they all "need attention." Thanks for the info!
It is hard to say, I have seen some at ham fests for $100+ that were claimed that they worked well. I also have see some that were $150 and did not work well.
Does it have the weather channel?
I don't believe that it does
I have one and love it. I use it mostly for internet radio, however I have used it for terrestrial radio as well. FM is excellent, SW is decent with the internal antenna, great with an external antenna. AM is pretty terrible, but I can get most of those on the internet part of the radio. Otherwise for terrestrial radio that is what my Tecsun PL-990 is for.
Thanks for sharing your opinion of it. It is good to hear what other people think about it
hi does it cover air bands im in the uk. thanks
I don't believe it does
Hello do you know if its illegal in USA on radio to play music that are from Spotify?
I am not 100% sure, you will have to research that more.
If you have a home from 2001 until today. There should be a double gang blank plate on the garage wall. There is a ground wire tied to the steel in the slab foundation. I use that to ground the unit. But, how do you ground the antenna?
I used a copper ground rod in the ground. They recommended 8 feet but all I could do was 4 with all the rocks here
@FarpointFarms I understand. And back in the 70s 80s and 90s we drove 2 ground rods, 6' a part, and ground wire uncut to one and then another. But the NEC determined thar the slab ground was the best bond. You can ohm it out...But both work.
um, why does the box say 10 meter? Isn't CB 11 meter?
This is an export radio that is able to cover multiple bands
HAM radio youtuber KC9CUK tested out this CB rig and the Bluetooth connectivity allows the handset & control box to be as far as 200ft apart thus you could improvise a rudimentary base station. Simply power the handset with a USB power bank and set up shop in home, office or hotel room that's not too far away from car/truck (& control box, antenna etc). Just be sure not to run down car battery overnight!
👎 👎
Sorry that you feel like this was worth 2 thumbs down...
if you have room and you are a Ham, we all have more than one, for SW listening I also like the MLA-30+ Loop, I have a dipole for 10, 11, & 12 meter it has pretty good SWR across those bands, and a long wire with taps upwards of 130 foot from 1 to 30mhz and one for 6 meter, not wanting to spend thousands on antennas over the years at Ham fests, yard sales and FB marketplace I have put together a good Antenna Farm LOL and I was able to put the big money into radios that could pull QRP stations out of the QRM/QRN :)
Is it auto defrost?
It is not.
@@FarpointFarms Thanks
How do you set up a station to be a favorite and then how do you re-call a favorite? I push the red heart on a station, but then I don't know if it's really saved or how to call it up.
Witch one would you recommend for the wood this one or the wilson little will ?
Tough call. This one is better looking, but the tram 300/lil will have better range.
Please don't confuse criticism with hate. It’s great news that the manufacturer listened to the viewers and made changes. Actions like making improvements based on customer feedback will make companies stand out and become more successful. Great review and well done, Choyoung.
Thank you for this- I truly feel like they do care about what the consumer is looking for and listened to what people had to say
Eric, Choyong just posted a 19 second short video on thier upcoming radio. A walnut wood table radio that appears to be FM, Shortwave and BT, based on knob labeling (could be better) and tuning dial display.
I saw that radio, it looks beautiful- nice retro look
Thanks you saved me 400.00$ for a new mower.
I am glad I could help
I got one that does 140 above 140 below with a 10 Kc slide pristine
Wow. That's a lot of coverage! Nice!!
I see a lot of comments from Europe about this radio lacking DAB. Here in the US we have HD Radio- similar to DAB but it IBOC (In band on channel) I really wish more US radios had the HD digital. (Hybrid Digital)
I had high hopes when it first came out. Bought a radio for the car with it and listened as more and more stations picked up sub channels. But then it just stopped. Sadly some stations even dropped the extra channels over the years.
If your up to taking out a few screws, I would love to see a video on the insides and speaker.
Hmm. I'm not sure I want to mess with it. It wasn't cheap!
Great video- Looks like a really cool radio. Can you record from the radio to the TF card? I see Radioddity has a mini version of this radio. Have you tried that one yet? Does FM have RDS so you can see station and song info?
No on the RDS, and yes on the recording to SD card right from the radio.
I wanted to do this to my 2015 GT52, it does not have that shim.
Double check, it should!
@@FarpointFarms it doesn’t. Not sure why. I bought it new, had never messed with that switch. It definitely does not have the shim.
Hey i just got one of thease what power supply would you recommend
At least 19 amps. I'd look for a used Radio Shack unit.
i never realized how many am stations there was at night i have a small tecson pl-368 really portable short wave day time 2 or 3 am stations in nova scotia there is only 1 left other end of novs scotia i Google there are only about 100 in Canada left...one night around mid night i caught over 80. 2 montreal and rest were main. new york rest were u.s. stations a d now often go through the am band at night to see how many i can receive ...radio comes with a small directional ferit rod horizontal antenna which is very directional ....i do have a satalite 800 grundig in my shed but its huge this tecsun is the size of a tv remote and comes with a nice case can put it on a belt or slide in a pocket rechargeable battery charges on a cell phone charger also have a long wire with alligator clip to attatch to the telescopic antenna fun hobby
Pretty cool isn't it? Those night time far away stations really are a fun hobby to search for.
Thanks for this informative video. I’d also suggest that you check your air filter first. My carburetor was clean but a dirty air filter was keeping my mower from starting.
Great tip!
I agree that is why I still have my Radio Shack DX-440. They are fun to listen to also.
I just picked up a used DX440. I hope it still works!~
I’d like to see a decibel read preferably before and after, for more quantitative data. Supercool video keep it up man!!
Thanks! I understand that there may be an app or something to measure sound with.
@FarpointFarms A BIRDIE is a signal that’s generated inside the radio and mixes with actual frequencies you are trying to listen to - sounds like two stations transmitting on top of each other and makes an annoying whistle blocking the program you are trying to listen to
Thanks for the info!
@@FarpointFarms one other point I left out the radio doesn’t put out this interference on every frequency but just some that aren’t filtered out like current local oscillator mixed with particular intermediate frequencies and that special combination makes the birdie irregular and annoying another example a cheaper scanner will also have this quirk so I suppose depending on use case you may encounter depending on the design of the receiver and the proper shielding characteristics. There maybe a Wikipedia article on birdies and the math used to determine where and when a birdie will show up. I’m glad I could give you a starting point into the quirks of radios designed for our information and entertainment consumption. Have a good day
Swr calibration involves adjusting the antenna length duh.
Yes.
I can’t understand why anyone would want a shortwave receiver or transceiver without sideband.
For non-ham users (99.7% of users) SSB is not a feature they want or need. No commercial shortwave stations broadcast on sideband, nor do AM for FM stations. That said, for the .3% of us that complained, Choyong added full band coverage and SSB modes.
@@FarpointFarms I really love my sideband so I can listen to the hurricane net , those hams on 10 meters and freebanders north of 11 meters from my home in Michigan. Radio is a hobby of discovery and I don’t like being on the outside looking in.
Thank you so much that helped a lot
Glad it helped!
There is probably a school of radio enthusiasts who just love traditional radio and really don't consider internet radio to be real radio. I recently bought a radio and decided to go with the Tecsun PL-880. It's a terrific radio with very few shortcomings and does just what I want it to do. I did consider the LC90 in this decision, but I just didn't feel that the LC90 is a solid performer on the traditional radio end for my needs. Not having a radio stand and a logical location for the radio jacks is also a deal killer. I wanted a radio that would be very useful during times of emergency by being independent of the internet and cell towers. Though SSB is popular with ham operators, there is more on SSB than just hams. You can also pull in aircraft and air traffic control (ATC), ships at sea, military, spy network, clandestine, and pirate transmissions. Occasionally some shortwave broadcast stations use SSB as well. The LC90 is a nice beginning for an integrated radio. It can only get better and may someday be a radio I want to own. I would also like to see a base station radio in the future. For now it may be better to own two radios, a solid internet radio and a solid traditional radio until a better integrated radio is made.
They are really missing the boat on Internet Radio. It's the RUclips of radio. Anyone can broadcast for free and reach a worldwide audience. I've been "On the Air" since late 1999 and still enjoy it to this day. So many channels out there and those don't include all the smaller mom and pop AM stations scattered around the USA that I would never be able to hear over the air. It's what sold me on this radio and it's why I continue to feel it's the best radio I've reviewed.
All I know is that you’re a cheapskate offering the gentleman $40 and I’m now listening to you of how proud you are. Everyone in their right mind knows that that tractor is well worth $100. What we call you is a low Baller. I really do like your video so I’m gonna give you a like the words to the wise is give people when their things what it’s really worth cheapskate 😂
I bought one. If I have any complaints, it’s not with the radio, it’s the instruction manual. Haven’t downloaded the updates yet. But I’m anxious to get them. Great radio. I love listening to “Old-time Radio” classics.
I am a fan of 40s music (big band) there is a station out of england that is in the list that plays it 24/7 with some great DJs as well.
Sorry, cb is by no means king any more...
I disagree. Nothing else would have given me the info on demand that I needed while traveling.
